2 Wrapping up Chapter 2

Nick Blair

In Chapter 2, you read about a number of strategies for getting started on your community engaged learning project. Here are some key take-aways:

  • when approaching your project, be sure you are familiar with organization priorities based on all available materials
  • recognize that the work of this project is an important part of multiple major initiatives running concurrently within the organization
  • each organization has specific orientations towards social issues; work to understand the organization’s positions and priorities to determine effective approaches to the project
  • projects you may be interested in may not be associated with a partner you are able or willing to work with. If you find yourself in this position, contact your instructor
  • orienting your efforts to support existing inititiaves and future goals is the first step to ensure you don’t duplicate ongoing work by organization staff or volunteers

Key words from this chapter: UX: user experience

Reflection exercise: Describe three strategies from design thinking that you could apply to an ongoing project for any class you are currently taking. How will these strategies inform your work on your community engaged project?
