Chapter Two: COLLABORATIVE CONSTRUCTION

Johanna L. Phelps, Meagan Lobnitz, and Nick Blair

There are a number of principles that can help you succeed while working on projects in support of nonprofits. It is important for you to understand partner organizations’ priorities; construct a learning environment that will set you up for success; practice design-thinking and user experience (UX) strategies; and recognize your privilege while embodying cultural competence. This chapter provides an overview of each of these considerations as you establish the scope of your project and begin interacting with your community partner.

After reading this chapter, you will have an understanding of the following:

  • roles and dynamics of group projects
  • how to approach a project individually or with your group
  • strategies for accomplishing project goals
  • strategies for interacting with your community partner
  • common tools for creating and revising your project
  • reflection questions to inform your drafting and revision efforts
